I didn’t realize how much little things could impact someone in the hospital. When I was working at the University of Minnesota, I discovered that I could freely pray for someone in a public university system. Although I had to be discreet about expressing my faith, no one refused prayer, especially when they were in pain. One day I brought a get well card to the university chancellor’s wife who was recovering from a major surgery. I prayed briefly with her before I left and she remembered it very fondly for years. The university chancellor himself became very supportive of my faith and had made allowance for me numerous times. My philosophy of healthcare as ministry is to introduce God’s presence in little things to whomever in physical or emotional pain.
