How to Apply for Benefits

We won't lie. Applying for benefits is a tricky process, but we're committed to helping you through the steps. What you'll find on this page is a simplified outline of the paperwork and tasks you need to complete. (Full instructions are available on the Veterans Affairs website.) You may apply for benefits and general admission to Adventist University at the same time. Keep in mind, however, that the University cannot provide enrollment certification to the VA until the following steps are complete.

Step 1

Veterans

If you have never applied for benefits before,
complete Form 22-1990, Application for VA Education Benefits, on the Apply Page of the Veterans Affairs website.

If you have used benefits before, but are changing schools or programs, complete Form 22-1995, Request for Change of Program or Place of Training.

In addition to filling out one of the above forms, if you were honorably discharged, submit a copy of your Member 4 DD214 to the University.

Dependents

In addition to completing the correct form, dependents must prove their relationship to a veteran by providing a birth certificate or marriage license to the University.

If you have never applied for benefits before, complete Form 22-5490, Dependents' Application for VA Education Benefits

If you have used benefits before, but are changing schools or programs, complete Form 22-5495, Dependent's Request for Change of Program or Place of Training

Step 2

Upon completing the necessary Veterans Affairs applications and processes, you will receive a certificate of eligibility. Submit a copy of that certificate to Adventist University.

Step 3

Complete the Adventist University forms VA Responsibilities and Certification and VA Statement of Understanding.

Step 4

Once you have completed the above steps and are granted general admission to the University, you may register for classes. When you are finished registering, please notify Starr Bender so she can send your enrollment certification to the VA.
