An Award Given—A Dream Fulfilled

Ever since she was a little girl, Susan Boyd has dreamed of becoming a nurse. Imagine her delight when she learned that the Florida Nursing Student Association (FNSA) had chosen her for their Leadership Award for FNSA District 8.

Boyd’s career has taken many different paths over the years. She worked as a flight attendant, owned a hair salon and upscale clothing boutique, and even worked for the U.S. State Department and the Department of Defense. But, the dream of becoming a nurse followed her. That’s when she decided to go back to school and fulfill that dream, choosing to attend Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences (FHCHS).

"It was a tough road to travel down and there were times that I seriously questioned my sanity," said Boyd." But everyone does that at some point during the nursing program and that’s when the support of your classmates and instructors comes in."

Boyd made the decision to join FNSA for the opportunity to gain real-world experience and the chance to help others in need. At Florida Hospital College, FNSA organizes opportunities for members to explore professional aspects, organizations, and areas of interest available in the nursing world. Since coming to FHCHS, Boyd has served as the organization’s secretary, events co-chair, and president. She’s helped to organize events such as Project Pressure, which is a hypertension awareness program, and the yearly flu-vaccination program hosted by Florida Hospital.

Every year, FNSA offers awards to students who execute outstanding leadership abilities in the nursing field. In FNSA District 8, it was Boyd’s year.

"[Boyd] was the first person to pop into my head when I was asked about the award," noted Jennifer Clark, FHCHS Nursing faculty and FNSA advisor.

In addition to the recognition, Boyd also received a plaque, a certificate, and a $250 monetary prize. With a passion for excellence and a dedicated spirit, Susan Boyd will continue to win awards in the hearts and minds of those she ministers to.

She has some advice for those who find themselves where she was: "Remember to breathe and don’t be afraid to ask for help." Wise words for any career path.

Florida Hospital College congratulates Susan Boyd on her achievements and wishes her success in the future!
